Once you have more than one serum, the natural question is: which one goes first? And do they even work together? Serum order isn't a small detail — the wrong order can reduce how well a product works or irritate your skin. This guide will help you set up your routine in two minutes.
The golden rule: thinnest to thickest
Always start with the lightest (water-based) texture and finish with the heaviest (creamy), so each layer reaches the skin without being blocked by the one before:
- Cleanser
- Toner (if you use one)
- Serums — lightest first
- Moisturizer
- Morning: sunscreen as the last step
How long should I wait between serums?
Not long — about a minute, until the serum has absorbed and there's no wet layer left on your face. The exception: salicylic acid serum goes on completely dry skin, so wait after cleansing until your face is fully dry.
What works together and what doesn't?
| Combination | OK? |
|---|---|
| Hyaluronic acid + niacinamide | ✅ Yes, in the same routine — hyaluronic first |
| Hyaluronic acid + salicylic acid | ✅ Yes — salicylic first on dry skin, then hyaluronic once absorbed |
| Niacinamide + salicylic acid | ⚠️ Best at different times: niacinamide in the morning, salicylic at night |
| Salicylic acid + vitamin C or retinol | ❌ Not in the same routine |
| Salicylic acid + other exfoliants | ❌ No — over-exfoliating weakens the skin barrier |

Common layering mistakes
- Starting everything at once: add one new product every week or two so you know what helps and what bothers your skin.
- Using too much: 3–4 drops of each serum cover the whole face.
- Skipping moisturizer: a serum is not a replacement for moisturizer.
- Skipping sunscreen: especially with salicylic acid and niacinamide, so you don't lose your results.
FAQ
How many serums can I use at once? Two or three at most. More than that doesn't improve results and increases the chance of irritation.
Can I mix serums in my palm and apply them together? Better not — apply each serum on its own, in order, so each one works properly.
